conversations: the art of process

Recent conversations the artist has had with herself and others inspired this series of paintings. These surreal and cartoon-like paintings convey specific conversations about religion, control, height, gender, inadequacy, and more.

artist’s remarks:

I am often reminded of how little impact my voice and options have. Of course, there’s merit in speaking up, but it rarely affects any outcomes. I am just one flawed human being with a sheltered perspective and very little empathy. I understand that I can’t be the final say. Nor should I be! Even if nothing changes right away, making my voice heard, examining new perspectives, and becoming open to growth are fundamental steps towards change in myelf and others.

artist’s remarks:

Sometimes I wonder if where I am in my life is where I’m supposed to be. While creating this painting I thought a lot about my life in Richmond, VA. What would my life be like if I was still living there? What am I missing out on because I moved back to Louisiana?

There have been so many moments in my life where I would love to be unseen. Hide me in the background. Don’t ask me that question. Avoid me at all costs. The problem is, as an almost 6’ tall female, it’s almost impossible to not be noticed.

I want to be the girl who lives on Strawberry St. She bikes to local coffee shops, and goes to the farmer’s market every Saturday. She always wears cute dresses, only speaks when she knows what she’s talking about, and embraces life as the perfect “girl next door.” I will never be that girl.
